US Marine Hospital

The US Marine Hospital in Galena, Illinois, has become the center of attention for the tourism mecca.  Languishing in the wood on the outskirts of town, the vast majority of residents weren't even aware it existed until it was purchased in 2020.

The building was designed by architect Ammi B. Young and Ely Parker, who would later become one of Galena's nine Civil War generals, was the engineer supervising the construction.  The Customs House and Post Office was built in Galena simultaneously, again designed and supervised by Young and Parker, respectively.

What is the US Marine Hospital and why is it important?  There is a new website - USMarineHospital.org, designed to tell the story of the structure in Galena, showcasing past and present photographs and including a link to the proposed development of the property and adjacent farm.
